Puppy Stuff

I frequently get asked for puppy help and while I'm always more than willing to help I thought I'd finally take the time and put up all the info on a webpage to save me recreating it repeatedly. Somehow I can never find those emails I send off when I need them again. So here goes:

Wormers:

Fenbendazole The brand names are "panacur" and "safeguard" This wormer is effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, certain tapeworms and parasites called strongyles and strongyloides. Fenbendazole is also effective against certain parasites of the bronchial tree and lungs (Aelurostrongylus and Paragonimiasis). Dosage of the 10mg/ml suspension is 1 ml per 5 pounds given once daily for 3 days.

You can buy it here:
KVVet Safeguard
Valley Vet 125 ml bottle
Valley Vet 1000 ml bottle

Pyrantel Pamoate Brand name is "Strongid", but is available as a generic as well. This wormer is effecive against roundworms, hookworms and some stomach worms. Dosage of the 50mg/ml suspension is 1 ml per 20 pounds.

You can buy it here:
KVVet Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension

Vaccines:

I believe in minimal vaccinations so I only vaccinate my puppies against the high risk diseases of distemper and parvo. I also vaccinate much later than many people allowing time for my puppies' immune system to mature.
Progard puppy DPv This is a vaccine that just has distemper and parvo in it.

You can buy it here:
Revival Animal Health

Other useful things:

3 cc syringes Useful for giving your vaccines and worming medicine:

KVVet 3 cc syringe without needle

Teat Infusion Cannulas These cannulas act like little extension on a syringe to help get wormer or other medicine to the back of a puppy's throat. Not used for any injections such as vaccines

Animart plastic teat cannulas
KVvet plastic teat cannulas

20 gauge by 1 inch needles Now you've got syringes for your vaccines, how about needles. I find 20 guage needle work very well and aren't too large or too small for giving subcutaneous injections. Do not use a needle to adminster anything to the puppy's mouth.
